Fitness Meets RPGs: A cyberpunk martial arts game

The gamification of fitness is nothing new. Zombies Run, the sonic augmented reality game, did this on mobile. Assholes like the people charging $47 for RPG FITNESS claim to have successfully fused tabletop dice with free weights. But what if there was a personalized game that brought the calorie burning fun of martial arts to a live action game?

Recently I completed P90x and afterwards found myself unmotivated, falling back into bad habits. I needed a fitness solution that I'd be excited for in the morning. Thus, I created Shadow Blink in the period of a few hours (it's rough). Starting today, I'm on the shadow blink plan. I'm hoping this game will get me back on track, loving workouts again.

You can play it too! Below are my prototype rules. I'll  also link the character sheet down below. Please note that I'm neither a nutritionist nor a personal trainer, so do this shit at your own risk. Also note that I made this primarily for myself, so it assumes some knowledge of kickboxing and weight lifting. Progress updates to follow.

Fitness RPG: (Technically a LARP Hybrid?)

SHADOW BLINK

In the cyberpunk dystopia known as 2017, information is the highest form of capital. The oligopolies shade their secrets in computer vaults that keep the public uninformed, easily manipulatable. Luckily, the Blood Suckers have all the right tools to put that data back in the hands of the people - and those tools are the shadows.

You are a shadow, an information runner. You break into on-site secured corporate files and deliver those data packets back to the Blood Suckers for analysis. Jobs like these require someone who's fast, agile, and can pack a punch. Too bad you're out of shape, right?

WRONG. It has to be you. Your gang needs you. It's time to put the theory into practice and prepare for the fight of a lifetime.

YOULL NEED

A character sheet, pencil, 1D20, 6 sided dice, exercise clothes, and a space to workout in. Each routine should take 30-45 minutes.

THE GAME CONSISTS OF

2 phases: training and missions. During training you will hone the skills necessary to be a shadow. Once you've trained enough you can start running missions.

On a mission you will infiltrate a corporation, fight through the security, and bring the data packet back home.

It doesn't matter if you do training or run a mission first, so long as you warm up. It depends on the day and how you're feeling.

TRAINING

You should play shadow blink at least 6 days a week. The 6th day should be a designated flexibility / stretching day, but it still counts towards your training.

During the training phase, you work precision moves and do exercises to gain SHADOW xp and improve your body. Successfully completing a circuit will earn you 1 XP.

Once you've filled in all the shadow XP bubbles, your XP resets and you get to pick 1 of the enhancement options. Enhancements will only work on your next mission and then are used up, you'll need to unlock them again. Some improve how strong you are at fighting, others make you faster, grant special abilities, and give more health.

THE CIRCUITS:

Kata 1:
40 push-ups 50 crunches
20 Alternating push and thrust kicks
40 push-ups 50 crunches
100 punches horse stance
Jab cross combo, 20 each side

Kata 2:
25 ab thrusters
25 oblique crunches
20 leg raisers
25 pushup punches
25 eagle crunches

Kata 3:
10 minutes of weight training
Shoulders, arms, and triceps
Each move repeated twice in a cycle of 3 moves

Kata 4:
6 plyometric moves
30 seconds each move

Kata 5:
20 alternating round house kicks
40 pushups 50 crunches
20 alternating back kicks
40 pushups 50 crunches
20 jab cross, hook, uppercut, knee, elbow combinations each side
15 spinning hook kicks each side

It is highly recommended that you mix up your katas to see faster and better improvements.

MISSIONS

You are infiltrating the _____ corporation. You must choose one that is equal to or lesser than your BLINK level. (Everyone starts on blink level 1)

0. Red Steel Industries (level 1)
0. LASER DYNE pharmaceuticals (level 2)
0. Apex Weapons and Defense (level 2)
0. Desert Eagle Distributing (level 3)
0. Universal MALICE (level 3)
0. Soda Shit Incorporated (level 4)

Next you need to find their defense level. Roll 2D6 on the chart that corresponds to the company's blink level. The result is the type and amount of guard you must fight and beat to win the data packet:

LVL 1

1-6: 1 Wolf
7-9: 2 Wolves
10-11: 3 Wolves
12: 1 Black Widow

LVL 2

1-6: 2 Wolves
7-9: 1 Wolf, 1 Black Widow
10-11: 3 Wolves
12: 2 Black Widows

LVL 3

1-6: 3 Wolves
7-9: 1 wolf, 1 tarantula
10-11: 2 Black widows, 1 tarantula
12: 3 Tarantulas

LVL 4

1-6: 3 Wolves, 2 Black widows
7-9: 2 Black Widows, 2 Tarantulas
10-11: 1 Cave Spider, 1 Tarantula
12: 3 Wolves, 1 Cave Spider

GUARD TYPES:

These are the different security guard codenames and types. To beat them in a fight you must have a combat total equal to or greater than their defense class (DC).

Wolfs: Common grunts. DC 6
Black Widows: Fast enforcers. DC 8
Tarantulas: Powerful tanks. DC 14
Cave Spider: Martial arts masters. DC 18

FIGHTING:

To fight, decide which guard to go after and start a 3 minute timer. You must now shadow box for the full 3 minutes. If you get winded and stop at any point you lose 1 of your 6 health dice. If you lose all 6 youre battered and the mission is failed.

At the end of each round you get a 30 second break. Roll 1D20 and add any modifiers from your training, this is your combat total. If it equals or beats the DC of the enemy you're fighting youve killed him. If it doesn't, the guard is still alive and you must fight another round.

COMPLETING MISSIONS:

Completing a mission successfully grants you a blink experience point used to level up. Shade in one of the blink experience bubbles if you've beaten a mission. Once you shade in all of them your XP restarts and you level up to the next blink level, meaning you can take on even tougher enemies and corporations.

INCREASING YOUR BLINK LEVEL

The highest blink level you can achieve is 4. Starting when you reach level 3 you can unlock an advanced enhancement. Advanced enhancements are permanent, meaning you can use them every mission.
